New Porsche 911 Turbo S unleashed with 641bhp and 205mph top speed

The hot Porsche 911 Turbo S features a new 3.8-litre flat-six engine, which produces 641bhp and 800Nm of torque

The latest Porsche 911 has impressed us in its initial versions - but now it's time for the 992 generation to turn up the heat with its new flagship: the latest Porsche 911 Turbo S.

Launched as usual in hard-top and convertible forms, the latest hot 911 gets a new 3.8-litre flat-six engine with a pair of larger, variable-turbine-geometry turbochargers. The unit now produces 641bhp, a gain of 68bhp over the 991-edition Turbo, and 800Nm of torque an increase of 50Nm.

The second of those outputs is available right through from 2,500rpm to 4,500rpm, so the old Turbo's overboost function has been dropped. The car's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has been recalibrated for the increased outputs, and the car remains four-wheel drive as standard.

As always with a sports car that operates at the extreme end of the performance window, the gains are marginal - but the latest 911 Turbo can accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.7 seconds (0.2sec quicker than before), while 0-120mph takes just 8.9 seconds. The top speed remains the same, at 205mph.

In common with 911 Turbos of the past, this edition gets a wider body than conventional 911s. It's 1,900mm wide above the rear axle, an increase of 20mm, and the front and rear track have also been widened by 42mm and 10mm respectively. For the first time, the 911 Turbo gets different sizes of tyres on each axle; the front features 20in items with 255/35 rubber, while the rear gets 21in wheels and 315/30 tyres.

Other adjustments to the bodywork include a pneumatically extendable front spoiler and a larger rear wing, helping to deliver 15 per cent more downforce than the previous generation. Ceramic-composite brakes are fitted as standard, along with an enhanced version of the Porsche Traction Management four-wheel drive system that allows up to 500Nm of torque to be sent to the front wheels.

Visually, the new model gets the trademark Turbo intakes just ahead of the rear wheels, along with wider air intakes at the front, different light modules and LED matrix headlights. Inside, there are 18-way adjustable sports seats, full leather and carbon trim, a 10.9in infotainment screen, a GT sports steering wheel and a Bose surround-sound audio set-up. Options will include a sports chassis that has been lowered by 10mm, a sports exhaust (available for the first time on the Turbo).

The new models are available to order now. The 911 Turbo S coupe costs from £155,970, while the Cabriolet version is priced from £165,127.
